Butterick 4201 with a dash of S2601 and M5927

I think this is one of the saddest patterns in all of existence. The envelope styling doesn't help matters either. I mean, I thank Butterick for at least offering one maternity pattern unlike most of the other Big 4 who don't offer any, but I have a hard time believing that all the talent there only produced this one unflattering design.

:(  So sad

I took view D and lengthened it into a dress. Then I added two rows of ruffles (pattern piece taken from Simplicity 2601).

I used my rolled hem foot to make hemming these easier. It was and it wasn't. The major flaw with the rolled hem foot is that it's only truly easy to hem a straight cut and the ruffle has a curved edge. I just took it slow and got decent results, but just FYI for those of you thinking of buying a rolled hem foot: they do not make everything easy. :)

I ditched the sleeves from the pattern (too t-shirt like for this dress), and added the cute little cap sleeves from McCalls 5927. Here's what we've got:

The fabric is a slippery poly charmeuse I got on clearance at JoAnn's. I didn't have too much trouble with it except for at the hem, so I used hem tape. I'll do a little mini tute on this next week because I felt like it really helped, but beware that my method doesn't make an invisible hem; there is a stitch line all the way around the hem, which I don't mind but some may.

Overall I'm really super happy with this dress. Maybe I should call Butterick and tell them I'll come be a pattern designer. Do you'd think they'd mind that I have no experience, can't make flat patterns, and can only combine them? No, right? And wouldn't that be kind of a dream job? That and/or getting to be the lady who makes the pieces they photograph for the pattern envelopes. How do I get that job??

xoxo,
